It ain’t braggin’ if you back it up

I’ve just realised that this week’s quote was actually by Muhammad Ali.  Is it bad that I know it from a Kid Rock song?  My taste in music does baffle, I’ve now quoted Bon Jovi and Kid Rock on this blog – I will try for a Judas Priest quote next!

It’s not bragging if you can back it up – Muhammad Ali (by way of Kid Rock)

This week I have been listening to, well Kid Rock obviously, and it helped me with one of those academic tasks where you need to ‘big yourself up’.  As a scientist prone to imposter syndrome I am often cautious and overly critical when it comes to academic ‘bragging’.  It is OK though isn’t it, you can big up your achievements without bragging as long as you back it up.

Backing things up is what us scientists do best; in triplicate no less!

I’ve come to realise that being a academic warrants a certain level of skill in bragging. Like most, I am far more comfortable doing this in writing but it seems to me we can miss out by not being more outspoken about our achievements, all for the fear of bragging.
